“Five passengers have died, 20-25 injured in the accident. The situation is serious. The incident occurred when a goods train rammed into Kanchenjunga Express from behind in West Bengal on Monday…. Three bodies have been derailed,” says Abhishek Roy, Additional SP of Darjeeling Police.
The collision took place shortly after the Kanchanjunga Express departed from New Jalpaiguri Station for Sealdah.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “Rescue operations are going on at war footing. Railways, NDRF and SDRF are working in coordination.”
In a post on X, Mamta Banerjee wrote, “Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident, in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. While details are awaited, Kanchenjunga Express has reportedly been hit by a goods train. DM, SP, doctors, ambulances and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue, recovery, medical assistance. Action on war-footing initiated.”
Siliguri: Five people died while over 20 were injured after a goods train collided with the Agartala- Sealdah Kanchanjunga Express (13174) in West Bengal’s Siliguri on Monday. The police immediately rushed to the scene and a rescue operation is underway. Two compartments have been affected in the incident.
